Mackinac Policy Conference
I just got back from the Mackinac Conference. There was a lot of talk about collaboration, partnership, and working together. It didn’t matter if the topic was education, mobility, the auto industry or reviving Detroit. The problem was, it was just talk. No plans were offered. It was as if hope or wishes were a strategy. This theme was culminated by the political candidates for governor who offered no plans, just sound bites. Maybe in this age of social media our communication is limited to sound bites. This is unfortunate. We expect our leaders to have a plan. The most effective coaches who focus on winning (which was talked about at the debate) are not only motivational, but they have a plan. Maybe that’s what makes them motivational. The conference reminds me of the Great Debating Society called our government. People will follow a vision. The gubernatorial candidates, our future leadership, couldn’t express one. That is disappointing.
